This research seminar will launch a project on the post-1990 history of Japanese investment in the UK Subsequent seminars will coverĀ research and development, pharmaceuticals, automotive and financial services. In each of these, Louis Turner will briefly give an overview of historical developments in that sector, to be followed by at least two participants in the relevant investment story. These seminars will be structured to encourage the involvement of people who have been actively involved in these investments.
By focussing on the post-1990 period, these seminars will look at how Japanese investment has matured since the era of Greenfield investments in the 1970s and 1980s, while also picking up the impact of the collapse of Japan's Bubble Economy. The Electronic case will be particularly interesting since there have been significant plant closures in this sector, as relatively unskilled operations have been relocated to cheaper locations in East Europe and elsewhere. This will allow us to look at what Japanese electronic activities have replaced the pioneering television and video-recorder plants. The Alps case is an interesting example of a company moving up the technological chain, albeit with a smaller labour force.
We very much hope that people (Japanese and non-Japanese) who have been involved in this industry at any level will come to join the discussions, which have deliberately been expanded in time to allow more discussion than is normally possible in such early-evening events.
