As part of our series of “Cleantech in Asia” seminars Marks & Clerk and APTN are joining with the UK-India Business Council to have a close look at the Indian cleantech market. Although the big Asian cleantech players are China, Korea and Japan, we should not rule out India as an important growth market. Statistics about the number of patent applications confirm there is scope for innovation in India in this specific sector.

Will Nieuwenhuys
Will has experience in a variety of patent practice areas, with particular expertise in the fields of organic and pharmaceutical chemistry.  He has extensive experience of all procedures before both the UK and European Patent Offices, but also has a substantial foreign practice, with an ever-increasing emphasis on India.  Will's growing India practice currently includes around 100 pending patent applications split mainly between the pharmaceutical and automotive sectors.   Will also has experience in the registration of designs, particularly European Community Registered Designs. Will graduated from Oxford University in 2003 with a Masters Degree in Chemistry, which included a year-long research project in the area of asymmetric synthesis. He joined Marks & Clerk in 2003, qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and as a European Patent Attorney in 2007, and became a Partner in 2010.  Will also speaks fluent German.

Sandro Macchietto
Sandro Macchietto is a Professor of Process Systems Engineering in the Department of Chemical Engineering, a Director of the cross-faculty Energy Futures Lab and a Member of the Court of Imperial College (Engineering) His research expertise include the application of mathematical methods to process design, control and operation, and the development of model-based experiment design techniques for rapid model development and validation. More recently, he has become interested in the use of systems methods for the analysis, development and optimisation of sustainable energy systems, with particular applications in the biofuels area. Interested in exploring the relation between people and research environment to generate sparks, he has promoted the creation of innovative mechanisms for fast track research, such as a successful Process Concept Studio, and interfaces between academia and industry. He co-founded and was a director of the interdisciplinary Centre for Process Systems Engineering, launched one of the first Imperal College spinouts and has been a driving force behind the formation of the Energy Futures Lab. Sandro is a visiting professor at the University of Padova, Italy, a member of the Advisory Board of ENSIACET (Institut National Politechnique) in Toulouse, France, a Board Member of the Asia Pacific Technology Network, and a frequently invited speaker on technology and R&D policy.

Bharat Varadachari Partner Ernst & Young, UK Professional Qualifications Bharat has a Bachelor’s degree in commerce from Sydenham College of Commerce, Bombay University and is a Fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Functional Expertise •Investment, Capital & Business Operations structuring •Technology Transfers •Tax Treaties Competencies & Experience Bharat is a Partner from the Indian practice of Ernst & Young and is currently on secondment to London in an Area role. Prior to his current stint, Bharat was the Tax Leader for the Technology Sector in India and also the Leader of the Tax Accounting and Risk Advisory services practice. Over a career spanning 19 years, Bharat has gained wide experience in advising both Indian and multi-national companies on tax, exchange control, foreign investment and other regulatory matters relating to their operations. He has worked on a range of fiscal and regulatory issues including those related to business operations structuring, technology transfers and inbound/outbound investment structuring for several corporates. His experience cuts across the Venture Capital/PE, Technology, eBusiness, Engineering, Procurement & Construction and Manufacturing industries. In his current role, Bharat is supporting Ernst & Young's EMEIA Area on its Emerging Markets initiatives. Bharat has been a regular speaker at events organised by chambers of commerce, industry bodies and professional bodies both inside and outside India on several topics including Doing Business in India, The Indian Budget, Tax Treaties, Tax Incentives and Investment structuring. Stephen Brandon
is a former senior corporate executive, who now invests in and advises selected ventures. He has particular interests in India and renewable energy, drawing on his 20-year experience of doing business in India and career-long involvement in the energy industry. He graduated in chemical engineering from Cambridge, spent four years with Foster Wheeler on process plant projects in the UK, Spain and Cuba, and then took an MBA from Cranfield. He spent 13 years with McKinsey, based in London and focusing on clients in the process industries worldwide, before joining GE to lead international business development from London. He move to Delhi as GE's National Executive in 1989, and to KL as VP South East Asia in 1993. In 1995 he returned to London to join the Board of British Gas, where he was responsible for the International Downstream businesses and Corporate Development up till the demerger of BG and Lattice group in 2000. He directed significant investments by BG in gas-based projects in Brazil, Egypt, India, the Philippines, Trinidad, and the UK, and in telecoms infrastructure in the UK. Since retiring from BG, he has advised PE firm Antfactory, chaired strategy consultants Credo, and is now Chairman of Iskrawind, who design and manufacture small wind-turbines. He leads a network of McKinsey alumni interested in promoting use of renewable energy in emerging economies like India.

Sean Sutcliffe
Sean Sutcliffe has been Chief Executive of Green Biologics since April 2008, contributing to the company extensive commercial and operational experience across the energy and renewables sector. Prior to joining Green Biologics he was from 2005 Chief Executive of Biofuels Corporation, a UK based biodiesel producer, and from 2007 Chairman of Tidal Generation Limited, a developer of tidal stream devices. Previously Sean worked for BG Group plc for 14 years in a variety of roles spanning operations, business development and strategy, most recently as Executive Vice President with responsibility for Corporate Development and New Businesses. Sean is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with an Engineering degree from Cambridge University and is a Non Executive Director of You Broadband, an Indian ISP, and a trustee of Practical Action, an international development charity.
