Clean Technologies and China

Thur 10 June 2010

(Hosted by: Marks & Clerk LLP)
(Organiser Asia-Pacific Technology Network)

This is the second in a series of seminars focusing on clean technologies and alternative energy in Asia. In this, we will focus on China which is one of the key players in this sector. Although China has recently overtaken the US as the world's biggest carbon emitter, there is plenty of evidence that they are trying to improve their performance. However they are hampered by the fact that they start with 70% of their electricity coming from coal-fired power stations.

The first seminar showed how active they were being in sectors such as wind and solar power, and mention was made of the possible inroads they could make into the electric vehicle sector. 26% of their recent giant stimulus package was devoted to clean technologies, which explains why UK Trade and Investment is encouraging British companies to focus on market opportunities out in China in this general area.

On top of their domestic policy priorities, their international position on climate change diplomacy has been controversial. There is serious debate about the extent to which their diplomacy contributed to the failure of the Copenhagen negotiations last December. So we also intend to discuss how their diplomacy has moved on in subsequent months.
