There is a growing international market for medical treatment. In the past, this was mostly a case of rich citizens from the developing world coming for treatment in established medical centres in the West. However, as the medical capabilities improve in the emerging economies, the flows are starting to even themselves out.

Dr Nermeen Y. Varawalla
Dr Nermeen Varawalla has substantial experience of the Life Sciences and Healthcare Sectors which she deploys to help develop international business between UK and Indian organisations, in her capacity as a UKTI sector specialist. Nermeen has a proven track record in medicine, academia and business. Whilst at Accenture’s Strategy Consulting Practice, Nermeen worked with some of the leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. She subsequently set up PerinClinical, an India focussed Clinical Research Organisation (CRO) that she sold to PRA International, a global player. She led their European sales team and established PRA’s business in India. Nermeen is also the founder of OperationIndia, a specialist healthcare outsourcing business. Nermeen received her medical training at the KEM Hospital, Mumbai and was awarded the Rhodes Research Fellowship to the University of Oxford to conduct her doctoral research in Molecular Genetics. Nermeen practised as a specialist at two of the UK’s leading NHS Hospitals. She then obtained her MBA at INSEAD. Presently she is the CEO of ECCRO, a specialist CRO focussed on international clinical trials in India and is recognised to be an industry expert in this sector.
Keith Pollard
I am Managing Director of Intuition Communication Ltd, a web publishing business in the healthcare sector. Intuition was established in 2003. The company owns and operates a network of web sites that provide advice and information for patients in the UK and overseas who are seeking treatment and healthcare services. Our sites include Private Healthcare UK, the UK's leading portal for private healthcare services and the rapidly growing medical tourism site, Treatment Abroad. The Harley Street Guide is aimed at patients from the UK and abroad who are seeking information about doctors, dentists, hospitals and medical and clinical services in this centre of London’s medical expertise. Cancer Advice provides comprehensive information on the diagnosis,and treatment of cancer and is edited by Intuition's Medical Director, Dr Nick Plowman. Self Help UK has a searchable database of patient support and self help groups across the UK. Treatment in Spain provides advice on accessing healthcare services in Spain for medical tourists, expatriates, holidaymakers and business travellers. There are similar portals for Treatment in Hungary, Treatment in Cyprus and Treatment in India. A recent development is OHS Directory, an online directory that provides company profiles and information on occupational health providers, services and products throughout the UK. We have also recently launched a Medical Tourism Ratings and Reviews site, and established an online Private Healthcare Guide in partnership with Netdoctor. Medical Expert provides access to information about expert witnesses in the health and medical sector , and UK law firms that specialise in areas such as clinical negligence and medical negligence. In 2009, Intuition acquired International Medical Travel Journal ( IMTJ), a business to business online jurnal that provides insight into and comment upon the medical tourism indutry I write a blog on medical tourism on Blogger.
Melissa Martinez-Alvarez
Background I joined The School in 2008. I graduated from BSc Biology with a Year in Europe from Imperial College London in 2006. Following my interest in infectious diseases and development, I completed the MSc Control of Infectious Diseases at the LSHTM in 2007. After finishing my MSc, I volunteered with Christian Aid for six months and spent one month in the DRC evaluating their HIV programme. I am currently working on the application of macro-economics to health and the economics of globalization and health. Teaching I am a seminar leader in the Introduction to Health Economics and Conflict and Health modules. Research I am currently involved in an EU-funded programme entitled: Changing behaviour of Health care professionals And the general public towards a More Prudent use of antimicrobial agents (CHAMP). My other research interests are health and globalisation, infectious diseases and water and sanitation.
Elizabeth Boultbee
Elizabeth Boultbee has been involved in the development & maintenance of patient flows from international sources to the UK for 15 years, most recently as Head of International Business at HCA International Hospitals based in central London. With the strategic & operational responsibility for developing and implementing HCA’s international strategy the international revenue increased from £48m to £86m in 5 years. As a result HCA was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade 2009. Elizabeth was the General Manager of the International & Private Unit at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital (in the top 5 children’s hospitals in the world) for 4 years; General Manager of Moorfields Private at Moorfields Eye Hospital – the oldest and largest ophthalmic centre in the world and Business Manager at the Private Patient Unit of University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for 4 years significantly increasing international patient flows in each hospital. Elizabeth now has her own international healthcare consultancy business, specializing in the development of patient referrals from the Middle East and in helping hospitals establish international patient centres. Elizabeth has also worked for BUPA and PPP – the two main private healthcare insurers in the UK. Elizabeth was the “Women in Business in the Arab World” award winner in 2002 and is a Professional member of the National Institute of Accountants.
