Regenerative Medicine The aim of regenerative medicine, which often incorporates the discipline ‘tissue engineering’, is to generate functional tissues that have the capacity to repair, replace or stimulate the repair of living tissues in the body. Such tissues may be composed of cells, such as stem cells, a scaffold which provides a tissue template for implanted or host cells, and/or active growth or signalling factors. Over the past twenty years, this area of research has grown internationally and has led to a great many business endeavours, such as for Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI), which replaces damaged cartilage with a patient’s own cells. Start-up companies, which are often university-based, have had a range of successes and failures. The outlook towards Asia is favourable, as well as Asian investments in European countries such as the UK to provide services that are currently provided in home countries such as Korea. Which business models seem to be working so far? Issues such as the long-term R&D requirements of Regen Med products and services, as well as clinical trials and FDA/EMEA approval will be discussed.
