WHAT DRIVES THE FUTURE IN ELECTRONICS The output of the semiconductor business is a key element in all aspects of daily life in the 21st century, affecting numerous sectors from communications to health-care, entertainment, transport, defence, banking, etc. As the business has matured, economic dynamics have changed hugely with the costs of new manufacturing facilities rising exponentially with the adoption of each new generation of silicon technology, resulting in major changes in market share for the leading players and challenging ROI scenarios. Profitability has swung wildly as demand moves from allocation to oversupply on a regular cyclic basis. In this talk Matthew Trowbridge and Jim Eastlake will share their insight into this market, the impact that it has had for technology companies around the world, what the future may hold for both investors and users and how UK companies can exploit the opportunites offered by this industry. Jim Eastlake is Managing Vice President of Gartner’s Semiconductors Research Group. He is an acknowledged leading expert in this industry with over 25 years of experience to draw upon. Prior to joining Gartner, Mr. Eastlake worked for Texas Instruments (TI), where he held a variety of positions: first in sales, then in product management. In his most recent assignment, he was marketing manager for the European Linear Functions product division. He also held marketing assignments for TI's advanced bipolar and CMOS logic families, programmable logic, and 8- and 16-bit microprocessors and peripherals. Gartner, Inc. is the world's leading information technology research and advisory company that delivers the technology-related insights necessary for their clients, which aids in the decision making process. Matthew Trowbridge was assigned Chairman of Renesas Technology Europe in April 2009 after 6 years as its CEO. He led the merger of Hitachi Semiconductor with Mitsubishi Semiconductor in Europe to form Renesas Technology Europe in 2003. Renesas is currently in discussions with NEC regarding a possible merger of the semiconductor businesses. Matthew joined Hitachi in 1983, helping to create and then leading Hitachi's European Semiconductor organisation. Matthew also served as Chairman of the Board of SuperH, Inc, the joint venture between Hitachi and STMicroelectronics. Matthew is a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Marketer and Chartered Director. He has recently established MGT Support Ltd (www.mgtsupport.eu) to apply lessons from his past experience to the future of growing high-tech companies
