Background

  • This seminar will look at career development and the Asian pharma industry, asking questions about how the roles of Asian and "Western" executives have evolved over time.  Nick will be talking from his perspective as an executive recruiter who has recruited for companies in both hemispheres. The two Ians will reflect on lessons from their careers which took them throughout the region.
  • As Asian markets become increasingly important to the world pharma industry, major new staffing challenges are emerging.
  • Emerging markets mean the emergence of an ever-widening talent pool on which the industry can draw.
  • The career paths of classic "western" expatriate executives are being challenged by these new reservoirs of cheap, increasingly well-educated, and innovative local executives. As cost pressures grow on global companies, the use of western executives will be increasingly scrutinised. What kinds of career paths in Asia are best suited for such managers who are on a global career track?
  • To what extent are global or pan-Asian career paths emerging for Asian executive talent?
  • How are Asian companies handling the staffing of their international operations? What roles do they tend to assign western executives? Can westerners develop genuinely international career paths within Asian-owned pharma companies?
