This research seminar is part of a series on the History of Japanese investment in the UK (the project is being funded by the Great Britain-Sasakawa Foundation). This follows on from seminars on the electronics, R&D, automotive and pharma sectors. Although this session will focus on financial services, we will use the occasion to discuss issues such as the role of the trading houses and other service-oriented investments (in the creative area?).

BIOGRAPHIES
The Viscount Trenchard
Lord Trenchard joined Mizuho International plc as a Managing Director in November 2007. He served as a Senior Advisor to Prudential Financial, Inc. from 2002-08. He is Chairman of The Dejima Fund Limited and a Director of several companies including Berkeley Technology Limited and Stratton Street PCC Limited. He joined Kleinwort Benson Limited in 1973 and was a Director from 1986-96. He was first posted to Tokyo as Chief Representative in 1980 and served there eleven years in total. He served as the first General Manager of Kleinwort Benson's Tokyo Branch, from 1985-88, and as President of the firm’s Japanese operations from 1988-95. He has been a Vice Chairman of the European Business Community in Japan, a member of the Executive Committee of the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan and a Director of the Japan Securities Dealers Association. He was a Director of Robert Fleming & Co. Limited and Head of Japanese Investment Banking from 1996-2000. He served as joint Chairman of The Japan Society from 2000-04. He was Director General of the European Fund and Asset Management Association in 2006. He was a member of the House of Lords from 1987-99 and returned to the House as an elected hereditary peer following a by-election held in May 2004. He served on the Joint Committee on Financial Services and Markets in 1999. He is a Vice Chairman of the British-Japanese Parliamentary Group and introduced the debate on Anglo-Japanese relations at the time of the State Visit to the United Kingdom by The Emperor and Empress of Japan in 1998. He has also served as Hon. Treasurer of the House of Lords All Party Defence Study Group. He is Chairman of The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.
