This research seminar is part of a series on the History of Japanese investment in the UK (the project is being funded by the Great Britain-Sasakawa Foundation). This follows on from an initial seminar on the electronics sector. Subsequent seminars will cover automobiles, pharmaceuticals and financial services. In each of these, Louis Turner will briefly give an overview of historical developments in the particular sector, to be followed by two presentations from executives who have been actively involved. These seminars will be structured to encourage the involvement of other executives and officials who also have had direct involvement in recent developments. These seminars are being hosted by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation and being supported by the Japan Society.

Sharp Laboratories of Europe Limited (SLE)
Sharp Corporation established its first overseas R&D facility in 1990, in Oxford, in the UK. SLE now has a strength of 130, including more than one hundred scientists and engineers. The laboratory is the centre of excellence within Sharp worldwide for designing silicon on glass electronics (used in mobile liquid crystal displays), for displays with added functionality such as 3D, dual view and privacy displays and for molecular beam epitaxy (used to fabricate laser diodes for CD and DVD players)
The laboratory is situated on the Oxford Science Park in a building of 5,626 square metres. Sharp was the first company to set up a laboratory on the Science Park and has benefited from a close relationship with university researchers. The Science Park now hosts over sixty companies.
