It has long been recognised that the Asian world is challenged by diseases in different ways than the Western world. It is not just the nature of the diseases themselves, which can be and often are significantly different. It is also the scale of the humanitarian issues, the potential economic consequences and the pressure on the national healthcare resources of Asian countries – all of which are truly daunting. In this seminar we will look at what has been and might be done in future in reaction to these challenges from three viewpoints.
From the medical and clinical perspective we will consider how chronic diseases and their treatment have become a major preoccupation in Asian countries.
The pharmaceutical industry has sometimes been seen as focused mainly on the Western world, but there are now in place a number of initiatives and focused activities that are relevant to this area. Finally for smaller entrepreneurial Biotech companies there may be commercial opportunities that could make a significant impact on the problems.
Our three speakers represent what Asian disease means from these different view points:
