John will introduce his recent, masterly book on the Chinese and Indian software industries.
John McManus, Mingzhi Li, Deependra Moitra China and India: Opportunities and threats for the Global Software Industry (Oxford, England: Chandos Publishing 2007)
This book is a serious examination of the competitive challenge that the software industries of China and India are posing for the established Western competition. Moitra is a practicing executive in Bangalore, McManus is an academic who has also worked within the industry, while Li is an academic in Tsinghua University. Between them, they give some of the history of these sectors, putting them in a PESTAL context (political, economic, societal, technological, environmental, legal). They compare the strengths and weaknesses of the Indian and Chinese industries, on the whole concluding that the Indian industry has first-mover advantage and greater corporate depth. They analyse the competitive position of these two newcomers compared with the established multinational giants. On the whole, they argue that China and India will become an important part of the world industry, making life difficult for smaller new entrants elsewhere in the developing world, but being unlikely to overhaul the American industry. This book is empirically sound and is particularly informative on the Indian industry. It contains a number of interesting perceptions about the wider environment in the two countries, such as that the Indian education system produces better qualified graduates for this sector than the Chinese one does.
This is a good, well-informed, comparative analysis of the two leading new entrants into the world's software industry. (Review by Louis Turner 14 April 2007)
