Speaker Professor Sumit K. Majumdar, Professor of Technology Strategy, Information Systems & Operations Management, School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas "India's Information Technology and Software Industries: Ideas, Institutions and Infrastructure: Dealing with the Core Challenges and Contingencies"

The emergence of the Indian software and IT industry has been one of the more dramatic recent developments in the global economy. This seminar will examine how much it has happened spontaneously and how much it has been the result of policy initiatives. How important has been the interplay of foreign and domestic players? How is the industry spreading within India? How does the Indian industry relate to Chinese competition? To what extent are Indian software strengths translating into hardware strengths? How much is the Indian IT and software sector contributing to the creation of the jobs which an economy like India's actually needs? Will Indian infrastructure weakness hold the industry back as it seeks to evolve?

Professor Majumdar has spent the last month on field work in India and is writing a series of articles on the subject. He has worked with people from the Reserve Bank of India who have carried out a comprehensive survey of the IT and software sector. He is also researching the wireless sector in India.

He was initially educated in India, getting his Doctorate from the University of Minnesota in 1990. Over the last decade, he has been working on corporate developments in India. On top of this, his areas of expertise are Technology Strategy, Telecommunications Policy, Communications Sector Evolution, Strategic Performance Analysis and Emerging Markets
