Topics covered will be drawn from among: Examining the provisions of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive and the Restriction of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive in relation to the environmental waste regulation of electrical and electronic goods.
Customs and logistics: including a look at classification of electronic goods and how this affects import duty. For example, we will discuss a recent EU decision on whether computer monitors are televisionsfor duty purposes
EU competition law in areas such as IP licensing, pricing and merger control
Technology transactions. How should the parties to collaborative agreements decide on ownership of any intellectual property rights arising in the work they do? What are the benefits and disadvantages of joint ownership? What are the considerations for ownership of equivalent rights in other countries, and what are the anti-trust considerations when negotiating such clauses.
Corporate Restructuring - A brief look at legal issues which typically arise on restructurings, including issues surrounding corporate benefit, transfers at an undervalue, deemed dividends, informal transfers of assets and financial assistance.

This event is the first collaboration between Simmons & Simmons and the Asia Pacific Technology Network. Speakers from Simmons & Simmons will speak on a range of topical legal subjects that will be of interest to Japanese electronics companies doing business in Europe. We also hope that the event will be a good networking opportunity. Jeremy Morton, partner in the Intellectual Property Group of Simmons & Simmons, London, will chair the event. Jeremy focuses on electronics, IT and telecoms businesses.
