Japanese Pharmaceutical Industry 2005 – Mergers & Acquisitions.
Dr Colin Picton, Managing Director, Picton Discovery Consulting.
Japan is emerging from recession and it remains the world’s second largest single pharmaceutical market and Japanese pharmaceutical companies are restructuring both internally and through M&A. Foreign based pharmaceutical companies are beginning to find the Japanese market more penetrable and they have increased their activity and investment in the country. The ageing population has placed a severe strain on the Japanese healthcare system and represents a challenge and an opportunity for domestic companies in Japan. Over the last 10 years or so the domestic companies have considered ways to position themselves to be more competitive both within their home market and internationally and many merger discussions have been held. Restructuring and friendly M&A have been part of their strategy and there have now been notable mergers between hitherto fiercely independent companies.
Colin is the Founder of Picton Discovery Consulting and has 20 years’ drug discovery experience in several therapeutic areas in the pharmaceutical industry in the UK and Japan. He has lead and built the operations of three biotechnology companies. As Research Director at Glaxo’s research facility in Japan he negotiated collaborative agreements with Japanese pharmaceutical companies. Colin has achieved financing of biotechnology companies and implementation of start up and development plans, holding non-executive and executive board positions.
